Report: Pelicans Fire Head Coach Alvin Gentry

The New Orleans Pelicans have fired head coach Alvin Gentry after 5 years with the team. During those 5 years, Gentry only made the playoffs once, in 2018. With the Pelicans, his coaching record was 175-225, with a win percentage of .438. Aside from only making the playoffs once, the Pelicans missed the 8th seed in the playoffs despite having one of the easiest schedules in the bubble. Zion Williamson’s minute struggles have also been a speculated part of the firing.

The question now remains with Pelican fans everywhere, who would be a good head coach? Unfortunately for the fans, who would be a good coach and who is available are two completely different questions.

If we are looking for the best possible coaches, then we would be looking at coaches who are good at molding young talent. With players such as Zion Williamson, Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, Jahlil Okafor and more, the talent needs to be shaped properly, and then they are in for a bright future. I personally think that the best coach for the Pelicans would be… Mike Krzyzewski.

I know that sounds crazy, but hear me out. Coach K works with some of the top recruits in the nation every year, preparing them for the NBA. I have no doubt that he would be great at molding the young talent. And the second reason is that Brandon Ingram, Frank Jackson, Zion Williamson, Jahlil Okafor, and JJ Redick were all Duke Blue Devils! Coach K has already worked with multiple members of the Pelicans in college, and I’m sure he would love working with them again. Of course, there’s the obvious issue that he would never leave Duke, so it probably won’t happen. But still, it’s fun to think about.

Since Coach K more then likely won’t take the job, the Pelicans have to find a new head coach; and quick.

  1. Excellent choice, I’m sure he would love to be reunited with some of his former players, but at this stage in his career I don’t think he wants to relocate to a new State/City. Coach K enjoys what he is doing and that is preparing young kids to play at the next level. He is established in the community and is highly regarded as one of the best if not the best college coach of all time.
