Two of the most recent winners of the 2020 awards are Brandon Ingram, who won most improved player, and Giannis Antetokounmpo, who won Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY).
Brandon Ingram got 46 out of 100 votes, while the other top two candidates, Bam Adebayo and Luka Dončić, each got 38 votes and 12 votes, respectively. Brandon Ingram is in his 4th season in the NBA, and averaged 24.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 1 steal in 34.3 minutes in 56 total games. He shot 85.8% from the line this season, and made 137 three-pointers. In fact, he is only one of seven players to average 24 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and a steal. The six other players that put up these numbers are all-stars; and so is Brandon Ingram. In fact, he is averaging career highs in steals, rebounds, assists, and points. This award was well deserved, and I can’t wait to see how the Pelicans do next season. There certainly is a compelling case to be made that New Orleans Pelicans won the Anthony Davis trade.
Giannis Antetokounmpo, on the other hand, has put an end to Rudy Gobert’s chance at a DPOY three peat. He averaged 1 block, 1 steal, 11 defensive rebounds, and led the league in defensive win shares. Not only is Giannis the 2019-2020 Kia DPOY, he is also an MVP candidate, and looking for back to back MVPs as well. This man is the future of the NBA, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he put up a triple double average stat-line in a couple of years.
